It ain’t Metal Gear…
While many of the Neo Geo titles Hamster have bestowed upon us weekly could be considered classics, this week’s offering; The Super Spy, is unfortunately not one of them.
First released in 1990, for arcades and the home Neo Geo platform, The Super Spy has the player don the fingerless gloves of CIA agent Roy Heart, tasked with taking down an International terrorist organisation all on his lonesome, one skyscraper at a time.
What this basically amounts to is just strafing down endless corridors, lining up the on-screen fists with waves of enemies and throwing a few haymakers to the jaw. This isn’t a first-person title in the DOOM sense, Roy Heart exists on a strict plane, scanning left or right (and occasionally heading forward through the odd door,) while throwing fists and feet at an army of palette-swapped enemies.
Weapons such as knives and guns with limited ammo can be procured on-site, but add little to the simplistic and repetitive gameplay, which was a bit dull back then and doesn’t hold up at all today. Given that all of Hamster’s Neo Geo releases are the same price, your money might be better spent on one of the many other great titles in the catalogue.
