Scary: Estimated Virtual Console sales total $33 million

During a recent press conference held by Nintendo and NTT (who are working together to promote the broadband Internet capabilities of the Wii) in Japan, Nintendo’s Shinji Hatano dropped some impressive numbers in relation to the Virtual Console.

Speaking to the press in a Q&A, Hatano revealed that Nintendo’s classic games download service has generated 3.5 billion yen (or $33 million) in sales. Hatano then throws in, “We’re currently unsure if this is a lot or low. They’re not bad figures.” Yeah, $33 million in the span of a year for a new service packed with old games … “not bad.”

While the accuracy of these numbers can’t be verified unless Nintendo comes out with all of the related numbers (they’ve estimated 7.8 million downloads from the service), it’s still mindbendingly impressive. How much of that $33 million have you handed over so far?
