Seems to still be making engines
Back in September, Konami’s worldwide technology director Julien Merceron left the company after their reported shift away from AAA development (which no longer appears to be the case). He was the lead architect on Metal Gear Solid V’s mighty impressive Fox Engine, so for him to jump ship so soon after the game’s launch was somewhat of a surprise.
Fortunately, it’s been announced that Merceron will be joining Bandai Namco, to do pretty much exactly the same as what he did at Konami. According to the company, Merceron will be developing “core technology for contents and production pipelines for various platforms.” I think that’s the corporate way of saying “he’s making engines.”
Talking about his new position, Merceron said:
I’m extremely excited to be given an opportunity to make a difference within the amazing Bandai Namco Group, so well-known for its iconic IPs… I’m looking forward to empower the teams I’ll be working with and accelerate growth, innovation and creativity. The reach of this group goes well beyond games, it is a true Multimedia and Entertainment Group, so I know I will learn a lot too! Working with so many experienced people and friends and focusing on a wider range of entertainment forms is the chance of a lifetime!
What he’s working on at the moment hasn’t yet been announced. Considering he managed to make something as gorgeous as the Fox Engine at Konami, I’m pretty interested to see what he can do at a more stable company like Bandai Namco.
It’s also nice to hear that more people who were involved with Metal Gear Solid V than just Kojima are landing on their feet after having to deal with Konami’s bullshit.
