Cobra and Shadowloo join forces in new Street Fighter X G.I Joe comic

It’s the early ’90s all over again

Comic book publisher IDW released its first solicitation blurb for its upcoming Street Fighter X G.I Joe comic and it’s exactly as campy and dumb as previous collaborations between the two franchises have been. Destro and Bison join forces to hatch a fiendish plot to rid themselves of their respective archenemies by *shocking music cue* pitting the Joes and the world warriors against each other in a free-for-all tournament… Somehow.

Street Fighter X G.I. JOE #1 (of 6)

Aubrey Sitterson (writer) • Emilio Laiso (artist)

On a hidden island in international waters, 16 combatants enter a secret tournament… one that pits Street Fighter vs. G.I. JOE! M. Bison and Destro have joined forces, and taking them down will require the world’s finest warriors: Ryu, Snake Eyes, Guile, Scarlett, Chun-Li and Duke. New challengers Aubrey Sitterson(Hulk, Superman, Tech Jacket, Worth) and Emilio Laiso (Hack/Slash: Son of Samhain) bring the visceral combat of the world’s most popular fighting game series and the real world military action of America’s fighting elite together for the first time!

This set-up sounds as cliché as it gets, but I can’t help but crack a smile at the idea. I can remember lying on the floor and running over Cobra commander with Guile’s “Sonic Boom tank” on a distant Christmas morning. It doesn’t hurt that the alternate covers for the issue are spot on. The low-res version of Gung Ho and the Vega/Snake Eyes fight are pretty much perfect. The series will start next February if you feel like keeping an eye out for a nostalgic guilty pleasure.
