Super Smash Con grew quite a bit this year

Bigger than the first

The first ever Super Smash Con kicked off last year in Virginia, and it was a pretty relaxed, low-key affair, with a high tourney turnout and lots of energy.

This year it’s grown quite a bit though and they’ve not only expanded their space on the floor, but added some extra activities into the mix.

As you can see in the gallery, the 130,000 square foot venue isn’t jam packed, but it has a really nice turnout , and sports an early, successful con type of feel. Last year there was a lot of open space, but in 2016 there are more (good) vendors, as well as a lot more freeplay stations and more indie developers with relevant fighting games like Brawlout (which I got to play, and liked!)

They’ve upped their panel presence this year with speakers like Alpharad, and still hold tournies for every Smash game in the series, from 64 to “4.” My schedule never really frees up enough for me to have the time to sign up for Smash 64 (the one I’m the most competitive at), but there’s always next year.

In terms of entertainment, the Super Soul Bros. took the main stage Friday night, bringing their funk-oriented tunes with them — it was a great show and they have an encore today, with an 85-piece symphony orchestra and three more acts to follow.

Super Smash Con will continue to run throughout the weekend, with the Melee and Wii U top eight final bracket capping off Sunday’s festivities.
