I love Paper Mario: Color Splash’s sense of style

But, yes, the gameplay seems straightforward

Nintendo has taken the Paper Mario series in a light-adventure direction that, as a fan of the original N64 game and its superb sequel The Thousand-Year Door, I’m not especially enthused about.

That said, I have to appreciate the papercraft art and visual fidelity Color Splash is pulling off. It looks (and sounds) so dope! For me, that will probably be reason enough to play, much like Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, another Wii U title whose aesthetic I enjoy more than its gameplay.

Paper Mario: Color Splash is at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the fellows at GameXplain have captured a solid ten minutes of footage from the haunted Dark Bloo Inn. Do yourself a favor and at least watch the dancing piggybank shown at nine minutes in. That’s a breakout moment.
