How’s the Wii U doing? Many have perceived it as doing poorly in the sales category, at least until the recent release of Mario Kart 8. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime contends that point-of-view and says that it’s doing much better than some may believe, even cracking the top two spots in the console war.

In an interview at E3 with The Seattle Times, when asked if the Wii U could ever outsell PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Fils-Aime replied “The dirty little secret is if you look at life-to-date numbers, between Sony and Nintendo they’d be pretty close in terms of PS4 vs. Wii U, with Xbox coming in third place.”

Fils-Aime also commented on the bright future that the Wii U has in front of it, citing the likes of Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon as the types of titles that will drive adoption of the console. He also admitted that poor initial sales of the Wii U was mostly due to launch window games not being ready in time. But, with everything in the pipeline, the Wii U’s poised to have a “long and robust life.”
