Just as some corners of the Internet feared, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water‘s newly-revealed Princess Zelda and Samus Aran outfits have replaced the skimpy attire from the Japanese release.

Nintendo, placed in a no-win situation, likely would have caught flak over this either way. Had the risqué garb remained in the game, some people would have been upset. As it stands, others are crying foul over the changes and no longer plan to purchase the game due to “censorship.”

…which might be for the best anyway, since it sounds like this isn’t the best entry in the series.

Personally, I think the western release came out on top with these new Nintendo-themed costumes. They’re far more interesting and inclusive wardrobe choices than plain lingerie or bathing suits.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water launches in North America later this week as Wii U eShop exclusive. The survival horror game will then begin haunting Europe on October 30.
