Dr. Wily’s goofy ponytail stars in Mega Man #17

This month’s issue of Archie’s Mega Man, which goes on sale September 12, will be the first of a two-part “Proto-Type” arc focused on Dr. Light’s “first triumph” and “greatest failure,” Proto Man. We teased you with some early sketches back in June, but now we finally get to read writer Ian Flynn’s take on the Red Raider’s origin story.

In addition to learning why Blues left his creator, we also get to see younger versions of Light and Wily. Light is a bit more trim, while Wily is sporting one incredibly ridiculous ponytail. It’s like he was aiming for George Carlin but wound up doing Lady MacBeth from Project GeeKeR instead. How does that thing even stay suspended in the air? Does he use laundry starch?

Also in this issues is a side story about Guts Man and Concrete Man’s rivalry. You may be wondering why Mega Man 9 Robot Masters are being introduced so early in the series, but it makes sense considering the whole plot of MM9 revolves around Light bots that have reached their pre-established expiration date. That implies they would need to be around for several years. I’m just happy that the comic is taking sensible liberties that work with rather than against the source material.
