Capcom has acknowledged the controversy surrounding Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and its single save file that cannot be erased. While claiming it meant nothing malicious with its decision, Capcom has confirmed that future 3DS games are “unlikely” to sport the same contentious feature.

“I think it’s fair to say there was never quite the malicious intent that the conspiracy theorists out there would have you believe,” said Capcom US’ senior VP Christian Svensson. “I think it’s also fair to say that in light of the controversy it’s generated, I don’t think you’re going to see something like this happening again.”

It’s a little unfair to call those who were concerned over Capcom’s intent “conspiracy theorists.” When Capcom repeatedly refuses to give a good reason for its decision, one must naturally assume something’s being hidden. I straight up asked Capcom why the single save slot existed, and my conversation with the publisher abruptly ceased. If anybody fostered a conspiracy theory, it was Capcom itself.

Nevertheless, it’s awesome that Capcom has seen sense and listened to its disgruntled fans. You don’t see that too often these days.
