But first, a remake of Abe’s Exoddus
In a candid discussion about sales expectations for Just Add Water’s Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee remake, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, creator Lorne Lanning told Eurogamer that if 250,000 copies of the game are sold, that’ll be enough funding for a remake of its sequel Abe’s Exoddus. Going a step forward, 500k in sales would allow for the creation of an all-new, original Oddworld title.
Sounds attainable enough, I’d say. Though it should be pointed out New ‘n’ Tasty will charge $30 when it releases, which might be more than you were expecting. “This game will play better, look better, and you’ll have more fun with for more hours of play than games you’re paying $60 for,” said Lanning. “That’s a promise. And I can say that with absolute confidence. If this had a publisher, the price would be higher and they’d be calling in triple A.”
As for the potential new game, it would come after the Exoddus remake — assuming that moves forward — and Lanning would like to one day revisit the concept behind the canceled The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot. “Over the last year and a half, I’ve designed Fangus extensively,” he said. “And I would like to be able to move into Fangus as soon as a new IP in Oddworld.”
It’s wild to me that Just Add Water has been able to keep the Oddworld franchise going for all these years. Good on them.
